Organizing? How Do We Get There?

NJ Expert Organizer, Marilyn Shain Labendz, says that to organize is similar to losing weight.

Reducing Clutter is NOT Unlike Going on a Reducing Diet!

They are BOTH projects that we don't really want to do!

Here are strategies that work for both:

  • Consider short term goals:

  • Drawer by drawer- even one drawer a day.

  • As in day by day or even meal by meal).

  • Prioritize and work specific areas:

  • Clear the area of the clutter makes you most "crazy."

  • Get rid of the food that is most tempting.

  • Set up a reward system:

  • Take a day off from organizing after a short term goal, say a dresser, is completely organized.

  • (Like having a "forbidden" food, in moderation after losing 5 pounds).

Goals:

  • Make room for new stuff but not throw out the old.

  • Get rid of "just too much stuff."

  • Clean off surfaces.

  • Find things I have lost but I know are there.

Obstacles:

  • Biting off more than we can chew.

  • Losing sight of the target.

  • Getting sidetracked.

  • Not being in the mood.

  • Being angry at yourself for getting in this mess to begin with.

NJOrganizing Expert, Marilyn Shain Labendz, says that to succeed we need to set goals, have a plan and take action.
